Opening, not open
A thermal spa still taking shape
The resort is building a two-storey thermal spa inspired by the Oceti Sakowin, the Council of Seven Fires. It is not open yet, and the published opening dates disagree.
Status on 31 October 2026: under construction
The resort's home page, its amenities page and the spa's own site say the spa opens in early 2027. The FAQ says late 2026. The history timeline on the Our Story page says construction began on a spa scheduled to open in November 2026. The spa site adds that stay and spa bookings will only be available after 1 December 2026. This guide follows the newest wording, early 2027, and asks every guest to confirm before booking around it.
What the resort has announced
According to the spa's site, the Dakota Dunes Thermal Spa is designed around the thermal cycle: warming in saunas, steam rooms or thermal pools, then cooling in cold plunges or under waterfalls, then rest. The building is described as two storeys with indoor and outdoor rest areas, and the resort calls it the first Indigenous-inspired thermal spa in North America, a description that is the resort's own. A recent post shown on the resort's home page described the outdoor thermal pools, saunas and fireside rest areas as nearing completion.
- Nine pools: thermal baths, cold plunges and waterfalls.
- Saunas and steam rooms, including an event sauna for Aufguss-inspired sessions that combine heat, aroma and performance.
- Seven fires, gas and wood, inspired by the Seven Council Fires.
- Ten private treatment rooms for massage, body and facial therapies, two couples' rooms and a manicure and pedicure area.
- A Mingle Lounge, a Casual Dining Room and a Grab-and-Go Café.
- Signature scents drawn from the land: sweetgrass and cedar, sage and wild mint, prairie botanicals.
Who it is for
The spa site says it will welcome men, women, couples and groups aged 19 and older, serving hotel guests, resort visitors and the general public. That age line matters for families: the spa, like the casino, will be an adults-only part of the property. Children will still have the rooftop pool in the hotel.
Why the meaning matters here
The resort has tied the spa's design to the Oceti Sakowin, the Council of Seven Fires: there will be seven fires, each a reference to one council fire. The spa site explains that the concept and architecture are rooted in Whitecap Dakota Nation history and blend cultural storytelling with thermal wellness. Visitors who want to understand that context before the spa opens can start with the exhibit corridor in the hotel, or with a session with a Whitecap Elder booked through the Adventure Desk; see the experiences page.
Booking around the opening
A request sent through this guide for dates in early 2027 is welcome, but the desk will not promise spa access until the resort confirms an opening date and starts selling spa packages. The resort invites people to join a Spa Insider list for news. When the spa opens, this page will be updated with the date the resort publishes.
For the story of how the dates have moved, see the journal piece Three dates for one spa.
