Resorts are often built in one go by a single developer. Dakota Dunes was assembled over two decades, one building at a time, by a First Nation that treated each step as part of a long plan. The resort's Our Story page presents it as an expression of Whitecap Dakota Nation's approach to land stewardship, economic development and long-term planning, and the sequence bears that out.

What the sequence explains
The order matters for a visitor. Because the golf links came first, they are the most mature part of the property and the one with the longest reputation. Because the casino came second and has grown in phases, it is also the part most often under renovation. Because the hotel came only in 2020, its rooms are recent and consistent, but its choice of room types is narrow and its leisure facilities are still being completed. The spa, when it opens, will change the balance again.
The 2020 opening release also explains the design. It describes angular window trims and exterior wood panels that echo the traditional tipi, artwork of Whitecap Dakota culture in every room, and floor-to-ceiling windows across the hotel. Reading the building as the last of several steps, rather than as a stand-alone hotel, makes it easier to understand why it looks the way it does, and why it sits where it does, facing the land rather than the road.
